The second edition of the revised Family History Documentation Guidelines has just been published and is available through the online store. With illustrations and examples from the latest version of PAF 5, the second edition now incorporates the information included in the addendum to the first edition. In addition, it includes more examples of source citations, particularly Internet and other electronic sources. The enhanced section of examples should be useful as the www.FamilySearch.org Web site resources expand. The new edition of the Guidelines incorporates updated Web links and eliminates links to subscription-only Web resources. However, the core information of the book remains substantially the same as the first edition, which used PAF 4 illustrations. The book is now 116 pages; the first edition was 104 pages. Increased postage costs, particularly for shipment outside the U.S. and Canada, have necessitated a modest price increase in shipping costs. The Documentation Guidelines and its predecessor have set the "gold standard" for documenting sources in computerized family history databases. The Silicon Valley PAF Users Group, now known as the Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group, has become known for the original version of the guidelines, first published in 1992. As methodology for storing source documentation changed dramatically in recent software releases of Personal Ancestral File (PAF) and later in other family history programs, the users group recognized a need to revise the guidelines.
